The Open Carry Movement
Lately, the debate over gun control and the rights given by the Second Amendment have focused on the specific issue of unconcealed weapons. "Open Carry" as it is known, is legal in 38 states - including Pennsylvania.
The article “Locked, Loaded, and Ready to Caffeinate” explores the recent phenomenon of “meet-ups” in which open carry advocates gather in public, often at popular shops and cafes:
Gun owners in California and other states that allow guns to be openly carried have tested the law by showing up at so-called meet-ups, in which gun owners appear at Starbucks, pizza parlors and other businesses openly bearing their weapons.
“Our point is to do the same thing that concealed carriers do,” said Mike Stollenwerk, a co-founder of OpenCarry.org, which serves as a national forum. “We’re just taking off our jackets.”
The goal, at least in part, is to make the case for liberalized concealed weapon laws by demonstrating how uncomfortable many people are with publicly displayed guns. The tactic has startled many business owners like Peet’s Coffee and Tea and California Pizza Kitchen, which forbid guns at their establishments. So far, Starbucks has resisted doing the same.Students: What do you think about open-carry laws and the related movement? How do you feel about citizens carrying their weapons in public? Do you own a gun? If so, would you carry it openly? Why or why not?

I think that you should be able to carry a weapon with you at all times. Its a good line of defense if something happens. But i think you should only be able to carry a firearm if you are 19 or 20 because many people are irresponsible and could do dangerous acts with that firearm. I do not own my own firearm right now but i can say i really dont't think i need one.
ReplyDeleteI really dont care about open-carry laws. I dont believe everyone should carry a gun though because it may scare people. I myself do not own a gun because i don't feel the need to even have one.
ReplyDeleteI think carrying a weapon is a god given right to all people. I own guns, and Im probally going to carry one around when I graduate, and If anyone tries to hurt me or my family I wouldnt be affraid to use it.
ReplyDeletei think open carry laws are ok. citizens carrying their fire arms openly is ok because its their right and choice. yes i own many of guns. would i carry a gun openy? i would have to say yes because its my choice and because people are most likely not to mess with me
ReplyDeleteI don't really see a need for people to carry a gun out in public unless they are involed with the police dept or hunters in hunting season. They should make a law for this b/c people need to be safe when they go outside, they are not going to be safe when people are carring gun all over the cities. if I had a gun i wouldn't be carring it around just b/c i could endanger someone or myselve.
ReplyDeleteI feel that people shouldnt be able to carry weapons in public because it would make me feel very uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI have no cluse on this subject. I would not want to come out in pubilc i would not feel safe. No i do notown a gun. no. I don't want people to think of me as a cearal killer.
ReplyDeleteI believe that people should be able to carry a gun if it is legalized. It is a source of protection but i can see where people are coming from because it could be potentially dangerous. I do not own a gun but if i did i would not carry it openly i would hide it under my belt so no one could see it. If someone would carry there gun openly it is dangerous because if it would be loaded it could go off.
